Anne Arundel County Accident Lawyer Discusses how to Spot an Intoxicated Driver

The Foundation for Advancing Alcohol Responsibility reports that there were 160 alcohol-related traffic fatalities in Maryland during 2012, the last year for which statistics are available. John Critzos II, an Anne Arundel County accident lawyer wants to help you avoid being a victim by learning how to spot an intoxicated driver and reacting appropriately.
One of the telltale signs of an intoxicated driver is operating well below the speed limit. Drunk drivers often do this for two reasons: to avoid being pulled over by the police, and because their motor skills are significantly impaired. If you notice a driver going slower than normal, observe him or her carefully to see if there are any other signs such as:
• Abruptly stopping in an intersection or the middle of the road
• Swerving across traffic lanes
• Signaling that does not conform to driving actions
• Tailgating
• Making extremely wide turns
• Nearly striking another object or vehicle
If any of these other signs are present, chances are pretty good that the driver is under the influence of drugs or alcohol. As such, you should take certain precautionary measures to ensure the safety of yourself and the passengers in your vehicle. If you are in front of the operator, pull over and allow him or her to pass you safely. After that, write down the license plate number of the automobile so that you can notify the authorities. Give them a complete description of the driver and vehicle, and provide as much information about their location as possible.
Never try to pass or overtake an intoxicated driver, but instead follow behind at a safe distance until police arrive. When possible, try to warn others of the possibility so they can avoid passing as well.
Keep these things in mind in the event you happen upon someone who may be drinking and driving. If you have been injured in an accident involving a drunk driver, contact us to see if there is a remedy available under law.
