School bus crashes, particularly those resulting in fatalities, often add fuel to the debate over whether seat belts on school buses should be required. Maryland Senator Jim Brochin hopes to reintroduce a bill in January that will require school buses in Maryland to be equipped with seat belts. Whether the bill passes or not, there are several things you can do to encourage your school-age children to do to be safer when riding the bus.
- Stay seated at all times when the bus is in motion. Encourage your child to find a seat quickly and sit down right away. The child should sit in the seat and avoid hanging into the aisle or turning around and kneeling on the seat to talk to friends. Children should also wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before standing up.
- Do not cause a disruption. Most bus drivers deal with a busload of loud children. While it is not logical to expect your child to be completely quiet while riding the bus, you can encourage your child to avoid behaviors that may distract the driver.
- Use the handrails when entering and exiting the bus. This is especially important for smaller children, who may struggle to safely walk up or down the large steps.
- Children who need to cross the street need to do so safely. This means avoiding crossing directly in front of the bus or any other vehicles. Children should wait for a signal from a driver or wait for the road to be clear before attempting to cross the street. Even if a driver has signaled the child forward, remind the child to look both ways to be sure it is safe to cross the street.
