Steps to Take After Having an Auto Accident with an Uninsured Driver

Unfortunately, one of the things that a lot of people run into when they have a car accident is a driver who does not have insurance. When you have been hit by an uninsured driver, it doesn’t mean that you don’t have injuries and you don’t have damage to your car. Below are the steps that you should take after you have been in an auto accident with someone who is uninsured.

Call the police

One of the first things that you should do after being in an accident with an uninsured driver is to call the police. You’re going to need to have a police report and you also should tell the police that the person doesn’t have insurance, since driving without insurance is against the law.

Get witness details

Try and get the details from the witnesses because they can be really crucial to the claim that you’re going to make. The witnesses that were there can help you with collaborating your story and can provide evidence to the police and to your lawyer to help you with your case. Witnesses are impartial and they have nothing to lose by telling the truth. So having their details and the information about what they saw is essential.

Get Evidence

If you can, take some pictures of the scene of the accident. If you have been injured, have someone else like a friend take them for you.  This is also going to help with any kind of liability dispute that may come up. If it’s not possible to take the pictures right there at the scene, you can go back to scene another day and take the pictures. It won’t show all the detail that pictures taken that day will, but still can be helpful.

Get medical attention

Be sure that you go and see a doctor about your injuries. This is important for any kind of accident but especially important when you’ve been in an accident with an uninsured driver. Seeing a doctor right after an accident will show the defendant’s lawyer that you are really injured and that you’re just not trying to get more money from them.

Get an estimate on the repairs

Get repair estimates on your car. There will probably be an engineer who will inspect your car’s damage sometime during your claim, but the estimate is going to provide a quick guide with regards to repair costs.

The final step that you will want to take after being in an accident with an uninsured driver is to get someone to help you with your claim for your injuries. There can be a lot of difficulty when you have had an accident with an uninsured driver, so you want to be represented by a lawyer.
