An article in the Annapolis Patch gives an account of a horrible auto accident that occurred in Anne Arundel County last year. The driver of one of the vehicles was thrown from the vehicle and died on the scene. Two other men were transported to a local hospital because of injuries sustained in the accident. Police said that evidence at the scene indicated that excessive speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.
A recent study conducted by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, involving 100 drivers who commute into or out of the Northern Virginia/Washington D.C. area, revealed that 20% of auto crashes can be attributed to driver fatigue.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the following are the alcohol-impaired vehicle fatalities for the year 2011:
• Maryland: Of the 485 total fatalities, 164 or 33% were alcohol related.
• Virginia: Of the 764 total fatalities, 224 or 29% were alcohol related.
• Washington D. C.: – Of the 27 total fatalities, 8 or 30% were alcohol related.
Statistics show that a person who uses a cell phone or texts while driving is 23 times more likely to be involved in an auto accident. With events like the one in Fairfax County, VA where a teenager was killed by a person who was texting while driving, is making most states aware of this enormous problem. Recent polls have revealed that over one third of drivers (37%) have sent or received text messages while driving, and 18% said they do it on a regular basis.
