Tips to Help You Avoid an Automobile Accident This Summer

While people often assume (correctly) that winter is a dangerous time to drive due to hazardous road conditions, it is important not to become complacent as we enter the coming summer months. Summer holidays mean that people will be traveling far and wide for various parties, events, and vacations. In fact, it is estimated that 36 million people in the United States travel on memorial day weekend alone. This means that the roads will be congested, people will be frustrated, and there will be a higher prevalence of aggressive driving and drunk driving. To help keep you as safe as possible on the road, here are a few tips to help you avoid an accident this summer.

Lookout For Bicycles and Pedestrians

In the warm summer months, it is more important than ever that you be extra aware of bicyclists and pedestrians. Longer daylight hours and warmer temperatures mean that more people are going to be outside than normal; however, it is often easy to miss pedestrians and bicyclists till the last second, causing you to have to swerve to miss them, which often results in an accident. You should then be extra cautious and keep an eye out for bicyclists who may swerve into your lane, or pedestrians who may suddenly cross the street.

Avoid Driving Distractions

While it is always important to be vigilant when driving, and avoid distractions such as texting, eating, or drinking while driving (texting and driving may be illegal in your area), it is particularly important to avoid distractions during the summer. Since the roads are more congested than normal during the summer, taking your eyes off of the road for even a second could cause you to miss a sudden stop, resulting in a rear-end collision. It is then important that you keep your eyes on the road at all times.

Do Not Tailgate

When the roads become congested and there is a lot of stop-and-go traffic, tailgating can be tempting, particularly if you are in a hurry to get to your destination. However, it is vital that you give yourself a cushion of several car-lengths between you and the next car as this will give you time to stop if there is a sudden slow-down or an accident up ahead.
